San Francisco, CA, January 15, 2019 – Dedicated to producing premium sheep milk and cow milk products, Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta earned the esteemed Good Food Award at the Good Food Foundation’s 2019 awards ceremony on Friday, January 11, 2019. An honor bestowed only to brands who craft products of superior taste and implement socially and environmentally responsible practices, this is the sixth Good Food Award earned by Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta. Bellwether’s proprietor and cheesemaker, Liam Callahan, and his wife, Diana Callahan, were both present on Friday to accept the award.

The distinguished flavor and texture of Bellwether Farms’ award-winning Whole Milk Basket Ricotta comes from the high-caliber ingredients and traditional techniques. Using fresh whole 100% Jersey cow milk that is delivered daily from a neighboring farm, the whole milk is first cultured and then slowly heated in the kettles; developing the unique flavor and superior texture. The cheese is then carefully hand-ladled into the draining baskets to protect the tender curds and ensure the quality of the product.

Renowned for crafting award-winning sheep milk and cow milk cheeses and yogurts, Bellwether Farms is a family business founded by Cindy Callahan in 1986 with a flock of sheep needed to control the grass on their Sonoma land. The first sheep dairy west of the Mississippi was built in 1990. Each cheese and yogurt is still made on the farm by Liam and his crew, while all business administration is handled by Liam’s wife, Diana. Passionate about supporting organizations that provide hunger relief or offer food-education to their communities, the family team established the nonprofit Bellwether Farms Foundation in 2016; pledging one percent of their sales to strengthen the food system and seek opportunities to invest in communities where their products are sold.

Bellwether Farms offers a popular lineup of aged cheeses, such as Carmody, San Andreas, and Pepato. The creamery’s fresh and cultured products include top-selling Sheep Milk Yogurt, Crème Fraiche, Fromage Blanc, Crescenza, and of course, Whole Milk Basket Ricotta. Located on 35 acres in Sonoma County, Bellwether Farms is dedicated to sustainable agricultural practices, ethical animal husbandry, and crafting the highest quality dairy products possible.
