Bellwether Farms wins Three Medals from the American Cheese Society 2022 Judging & Competition Awards
Petaluma, Calif. August 16, 2022 – Bellwether Farms, a Sonoma-based family creamery, announces today it has won several awards from the American Cheese Society in its annual Judging & Competition Awards. The new Fresh Sheep Cheese Log — Original earned a Gold Medal in the fresh rindless sheep’s milk cheese aged 0 to 30 days category, and the Fresh Sheep Cheese Log — Sonoma Herb earned a Gold Medal in the sheep cheese with flavor added, 100% sheep’s milk category. Bellwether Farms’ Plain Sheep Milk Yogurt took a Silver Medal in the yogurts plain with no additional ingredients, made from sheep milks category. Bellwether Farms’ products were recognized by ACS's judges for excellence amongst 1,387 products from 196 entering companies.
“We’re especially happy to be recognized for our newest product, the Fresh Sheep Cheese Logs,” says Liam Callahan, owner of Bellwether Farms. “To win two Gold Medals with such fierce competition is truly an honor. We’re also really proud of our Silver Medal for our Sheep Milk Yogurt, a product that has really taken off for us in the last year or so. We know we have something special here at Bellwether Farms but to get recognition from the American Cheese Society is very rewarding and worth celebrating.”
Whole sheep milk, sourced from a small network of local sheep dairies, is the key to Bellwether Farms' superior taste, texture and nutritional value for its Fresh Sheep Cheese Logs and Sheep Milk Yogurt. With year-round access to open space, these sheep are raised without hormones and are fed an all-natural diet including grass and alfalfa to ensure the highest-quality milk production. Because sheep milk's protein is 100% A2 type, many people prefer sheep milk products since they may find them gentler on digestion than cow's milk cheese or yogurt.

Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta Sales Up 50%
Family creamery expands grocery distribution and continues momentum into 2021
Petaluma, Calif. February 23, 2021 – Family-owned Bellwether Farms today announces that sales of its hand-dipped Whole Milk Basket Ricotta increased by 50 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year. Thanks to this unprecedented demand, Bellwether Farms is working with its grocery partners to expand distribution of the Whole Milk Basket Ricotta, increasing availability in key regions.
As many fans of Bellwether Farms already know, delicious, authentic ricotta is one of life’s simple pleasures and is arguably the most enjoyable by itself with a spoon. Whole Milk Basket Ricotta’s smooth, creamy, pillowy-soft texture and delicate, slightly sweet flavor make for an indulgent snack, dessert, a star in a variety of savory dishes — and everything in between.
In accordance with Bellwether Farms’ motto “whole is better,” Bellwether Farms' hand-dipped Whole Milk Basket Ricotta is made from whole, full-fat Jersey cow milk straight from healthy, happy cows. The Whole Milk Basket Ricotta is even housed in its original draining basket, another touch that harkens back to the days of artisanal cheese-production and makes it truly unique.
"We are delighted that our Whole Milk Basket Ricotta is resonating because it's a product we are particularly proud of," says Liam Callahan, owner of Bellwether Farms. "We hear from folks all the time that they’ve never had ricotta as good as ours, and it makes sense. There’s nothing else quite like it on the market, and you can really taste the difference. We can't think of a better way to head into our 35th anniversary year than to continue this great momentum into 2021."

Family Creamery Bellwether Farms Shows Just How Much “Whole is Better”
Traditionally crafted, high-quality, delicious sheep’s milk and cow’s milk yogurts and cheeses stand out nationwide
Petaluma, Calif. – Nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of the Sonoma County coast, Bellwether Farms lovingly crafts dairy products including yogurts and cheeses using full-fat sheep’s milk and cow’s milk and traditional, artisanal techniques. Whether you’re savoring a midday snack, recovering post-workout, or preparing a favorite recipe, Bellwether Farms’ versatile award-winning dairy essentials are delicious and packed with nutrition.
Founded in 1986 and family-owned and operated, Bellwether Farms first received rave reviews for its sheep's milk cheese and yogurt from farmers' markets and chefs in the San Francisco Bay area. Since sheep's milk is extremely high in nutrients and in many cases more readily digestible to those with lactose intolerance, Bellwether Farms was able to carve a niche for the brand and make sheep's milk cheeses and yogurts more mainstream and accessible. Coming up on its 35th anniversary, Bellwether Farms now makes America’s number one sheep's milk yogurt, has loyal customers across the country and has secured distribution nationwide. But what still sets Bellwether Farms apart in the dairy case after all these years is a refreshingly simple approach that's been a commitment for the creamery since its inception.
Bellwether Farms' devotion to simplicity and wholesome tradition is no more apparent than in its Sheep Milk Yogurt and Organic Cow Milk Yogurt. Most yogurt these days is created by first cobbling together a variety of low-fat milk and cream sources — and then adding colors, fillers, flavors and sugars to make up the difference lost in taste and texture. In contrast, Bellwether Farms makes yogurt in small batches from whole milk straight from healthy, happy sheep or cows. Thanks to this premium sourcing and also to using time-honored techniques perfected over thousands of years, the resulting yogurt is lusciously smooth, delicious, and nutrient-dense.
The motto “whole is better” applies not only to Bellwether Farms' popular yogurt line but to all of its products including its exquisite, hand-dipped Whole Milk Basket Ricotta, made from pure Jersey cow milk. Cultured first and then slowly heated in small kettles until curds form, there’s nothing else quite like it. Another standout is Bellwether Farms’ Crème Fraiche, French cultured cream made from pure, local heavy cream. It's a favorite staple of professional chefs and home cooks alike and is widely renowned for its complex richness.
“With ‘whole is better,’ everyone wins,” says Liam Callahan, owner of Bellwether Farms. “The sheep and cows live full, healthy lives; farmers are rewarded for taking care of these healthy animals; we get to follow our passion and craft exceptional products we’re proud of — and folks enjoy food that is deeply nutritious and remarkably flavorful.”
And this holistic emphasis extends beyond farming and food production to giving back to the community. In 2016, Bellwether Farms established the nonprofit Bellwether Farms Foundation, pledging one percent of sales to organizations providing hunger relief or food-related education. In 2020 in response to the COVID-19 crisis, Bellwether Farms launched Project Spilled Milk and raised $50,000 to purchase excess milk from dairy farmers who had fewer open restaurants or schools to buy their dairy. Bellwether Farms dedicated one production shift each week to create yogurt from this milk and delivered 25,000 16 oz containers of yogurt to food banks in Northern California, which have been experiencing unprecedented demand this year.
Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Ricotta Wins Sixth ‘Good Food Award’
San Francisco, CA, January 15, 2019 - Dedicated to producing premium sheep milk and cow milk products, Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta earned the esteemed Good Food Award at the Good Food Foundation’s 2019 awards ceremony on Friday, January 11, 2019. An honor bestowed only to brands who craft products of superior taste and implement socially and environmentally responsible practices, this is the sixth Good Food Award earned by Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta. Bellwether’s proprietor and cheesemaker, Liam Callahan, and his wife, Diana Callahan, were both present on Friday to accept the award.
The distinguished flavor and texture of Bellwether Farms’ award-winning Whole Milk Basket Ricotta comes from the high-caliber ingredients and traditional techniques. Using fresh whole 100% Jersey cow milk that is delivered daily from a neighboring farm, the whole milk is first cultured and then slowly heated in the kettles; developing the unique flavor and superior texture. The cheese is then carefully hand-ladled into the draining baskets to protect the tender curds and ensure the quality of the product.
Renowned for crafting award-winning sheep milk and cow milk cheeses and yogurts, Bellwether Farms is a family business founded by Cindy Callahan in 1986 with a flock of sheep needed to control the grass on their Sonoma land. The first sheep dairy west of the Mississippi was built in 1990. Each cheese and yogurt is still made on the farm by Liam and his crew, while all business administration is handled by Liam’s wife, Diana. Passionate about supporting organizations that provide hunger relief or offer food-education to their communities, the family team established the nonprofit Bellwether Farms Foundation in 2016; pledging one percent of their sales to strengthen the food system and seek opportunities to invest in communities where their products are sold.
Bellwether Farms offers a popular lineup of aged cheeses, such as Carmody, San Andreas, and Pepato. The creamery’s fresh and cultured products include top-selling Sheep Milk Yogurt, Crème Fraiche, Fromage Blanc, Crescenza, and of course, Whole Milk Basket Ricotta. Located on 35 acres in Sonoma County, Bellwether Farms is dedicated to sustainable agricultural practices, ethical animal husbandry, and crafting the highest quality dairy products possible.

Petaluma, CA, May 7, 2019 - Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta earned the coveted Gold award in the competitive Cow Milk Cheese category at the 2019 sofi Awards. The Specialty Food Association’s sofi Awards have been recognizing excellence, creativity, and great taste in the specialty food industry since 1972. Sofi award winners were selected through a blind tasting process from 1,800 entries from around the country by a panel of industry experts.
“It is an amazing honor to be awarded this sofi.” said Bellwether Farms owner and cheesemaker, Liam Callahan. “Our team takes many steps to ensure this is a special ricotta, and we are thrilled with the recognition that it is the best.”
Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta was also honored earlier this year with the esteemed Good Food Award at the 2019 Good Food Foundation awards ceremony. The distinguished flavor and texture of Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta come from the high-caliber ingredients and traditional techniques. Using fresh, whole 100% Jersey cow milk from a neighboring farm, the whole milk is first cultured and then slowly heated in small kettles; developing the unique flavor and superior texture. The delicate curds are carefully hand-ladled into the draining baskets to preserve the quality of the product. The ricotta is then sold in the draining basket to protect the ricotta until it reaches the customer's table.
In addition to their top-notch cheeses, Bellwether Farms is also America’s #1 producer of Sheep Milk Yogurt. The first sheep dairy west of the Mississippi, Bellwether Farms was founded by Cindy Callahan in 1986 with a flock of sheep needed to control the grass on their Sonoma land. Each cheese and yogurt is still made on the farm by Liam and his crew. Passionate about supporting organizations that provide hunger relief or offer food-education to their communities, the family team established the nonprofit Bellwether Farms Foundation in 2016; pledging one percent of their sales to strengthen the food system and seek opportunities to invest in communities where their products are sold.

Bellwether Farms Introduces New Line of Fresh Sheep Cheese Logs
Family-Owned Creamery Expands Lineup of Award-Winning Dairy Products
Petaluma, Calif. June 9, 2021 – Today, Bellwether Farms expands its award-winning sheep cheese lineup with a new Fresh Sheep Cheese available in five varieties, Original — with a bright, clean flavor with notes of lemon — as well as Strawberry Preserves, Orange Marmalade, Moroccan Spice, and Sonoma Herbs. These creamy fresh cheeses provide an effortless way to elevate a snack, appetizer, main dish, or cheeseboard and are delicious crumbled atop salad, spread on crackers or toast, and as a velvety smooth filling in homemade ravioli or quiche.
